The Department of Trade and Industry-Region 02 is strengthening its commitment to promote food safety in the region as it joins the Cagayan Valley Food Safety Team (CVFST) in its bid to ensure that food handlers and food business operators provide consumers safe food anytime, anywhere.

Spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology-Region 02, the CVFST was conceptualized in May 2017 and is now unfolding to become a body that works together at ensuring that food is safe everywhere for everyone in the region.

In a meeting held on May 29, 2018 at the DOST-R02 Conference Hall in Tuguegarao City, the final draft of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was approved by the Team for execution by the members, which include regional line agencies, academe, business organizations and business operators.

The CVFST shall perform the following responsibilities as inscribed in the MOA:

  2. Provide capacity trainings on food safety for food handlers and food business operators;
  3. Provide consultancy and other technical assistance to food processing firms, such as, plant layout and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) assessment for certification;
  4. Recommend policies to LGUs for enforcement of food safety rules and regulations;
  5. Monitor compliance to food safety among food business operators and food handlers; and
  6. Establish linkages with other Food Safety Teams in the country.

During the meeting, DOST Assistant Regional Director Teresita Tabaog, emphasized the importance of synergy and unity among the Team members to achieve their goal. She gave another meaning to the acronym T.E.A.M.: Tenacity, Excellence, Agility and Maintenance (Sustainability), all of which should drive the members of the CVFST to action.

It was also agreed during the meeting for a Technical Working Group to craft a position paper or Resolution seeking support from and recognition by the Regional Development Council. Mr. Michael Paggabao, Senior Trade and Industry Development Specialist of DTI-R02 discussed the framework of the proposed Position Paper.

Mr. Paggabao and Ms. Ragel Tacazon, Trade and Industry Development Specialist, are DTI-R02’s representatives in the CVFST.
