The privilege to host the next National Mango Congress (NMC) in 2019 has been delegated to Region 02, particularly to the province of Isabela. The ceremonial turnover of the NMC key to Isabela was done during the 21st National Mango Congress held on May 30-June 01, 2018 at the Jordan Capital Grounds in Guimaras Province.

Mango is among the high value crops abundantly produced in Region 02 and with the growing number of mango growers in the province of Isabela, the hosting event is certainly a welcome to the provincial government of Isabela and to the Isabelinos.

Region 02 was well represented in the last NMC with a fifty-two - member delegation from both the public and private sectors, mostly from the province of Isabela. It is one of the regions with the most number of participants in the three-day activity which included a 3-day mango exhibit, a tour in selected mango farms in Guimaras and seminars on production & production technology, marketing & processing and institutional development.

Inspired by the theme “Guimaras Experience: Increasing Mango Productivity through LGUs, NGAs and DA-AFCs (Department of Agriculture-Agriculture and Fisheries Councils) partnership with various Stakeholders towards Sustainable Mango Industry”, the congress paved way to larger networks and partnerships among more than 500 participants across the country.

Hon. Sen. Cynthia Villar, Senate’s Chair of the Committee on Agriculture, who graced the event as Keynote Speaker, expressed her continued support to the local mango industry. She stressed the need to strengthen the sector, particularly on production, because a higher yield would mean higher income for the farmers.

Meanwhile, Department of Agriculture’s Evelyn G. Laviña, Undersecretary for High Value Crops Development Program and Rural Credit, pointed out the importance of industry councils and organizations in addressing sectoral concerns. The Undersecretary also mentioned that the province of Isabela is among ten pilot mango learning sites in the country to be established until 2019.

The National Mango Congress is an annual convention of mango industry stakeholders in the Philippines organized by the Philippine Mango Industry Foundation, Inc. (PMIFI).

This year’s congress was co-hosted by the Guimaras Mango Growers & Producers Development Cooperative with the support of the Provincial Government of Guimaras, Department of Agriculture - RFO-6 and Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Council (PAFC).
