Thirty-one (31) cacao growers, who have the potential for certification under the GAP System of the Bureau of Plant Industry of the Department of Agriculture, attended the training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) on August 22-24, 2018 at the Agricultural Training Institute, San Mateo, Isabela.
This training was conducted in pursuit of sustainable and competitive cacao industry in Cagayan Valley by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 2, in partnership with the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI).
The training is in line with the upgrading strategies adopted for the cacao industry as indicated in the Cagayan Valley Cacao Industry Roadmap 2018-2022 and is aimed at increasing awareness on best management practices in cacao farming for higher productivity.
Among the topics discussed were the Code of Practice under the Philippine National Standards (PNS) for Cacao Beans and Tablea, and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), which is geared towards food safety and quality in the production, post-harvest and processing of cacao.
Aside from listening to the lecture discussions of the resource speakers, the participants also had field observations/inspection to maximize their learning.
