With a simple intention to help poor farmers, ONEASIA TRADER was born.
It was in 2006 when Ms. Jesusa Chua Uy saw a promising business opportunity. She would pass baskets of fresh tropical fruits sold at very minimal price along the highway, as well as fruitsjust left rotten on road sides. She felt sorry for the farmers producing these fruits. She is not a farmer but she is fully aware of how much effort these farmers invest in farming and yet they hardly earn from their sacrifices.
She thought that there might be some way to help farmersget better earnings from their produce by avoiding loss from excess produce. “Dried fruits,” she thought, might help.
Ms. Uy had no knowledge onhow fruits are dried. She tried to find ways on how she could get some training on this until she was introduced to the Department of Trade and Industry, and the rest is history.
Miss Uy trained with the intent to pass on the knowledge to the farmers. She attended trainings on dried fruits processing. Today, Oneasia Trader produces dried mango, dried santol, dried coconut, mango chutney, coco jam and other processed fruits in season.
But such a dream is not easy. Success does not come at the “wink-of-an-eye”. Though she was taught to manage trading business at an early age, it was very much different from a processing business.
Oneasia Traderjoined local and national fairs, the latest were the March 2018 National Food Fair and May 2018 IFEX Philippines, where she got local and international inquiries and got a link on online selling.
She has also been a participant to astudy visit to Thailand’s Food Processing Industries.
Right now and with the unwavering assistance of the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Science and Technology and the Local Government Unit, the business is growing as it competes in the market.
